Job Description

A conservation officer main job is to enforce
the hunting and fishing laws and regulations.
They also collect water samples to help biologist
so they know that there isn’t any harmful
chemicals in the water and to check the level
of oxygen in the lake. A warden will also assist
in search and rescue mission and even forest fires.
A warden will also respond to an emergency call
in the area or a complaint about gun shoots heard
on private land or a tip that someone is poaching
on someone else’s land. Warden also discover,

bust, and destroy hundreds of marijuana grow every year.
A 120 grow were discovered and destroyed earlier this
spring in the surrounding counties, including one that was
discovered on August, 10 in Ashland county. A conservation
officer has a lot of things to look out for and worry about
when they are on the job.

Work Conditions

Conservation officers usually have to work in
all sorts of weather and conditions. A wardens
in Wisconsin usually has a 40 hour week
spread apart between 7 days, because it very important
to work on the weekends cause that is when all
the people who have work during the week head
out for that day of hunting or fishing. Sometimes
a warden even has to camp for a couple days in
the area that they are covering. Even though there
job lies in the forest sometime they have to
tranquilize a bear or other wild animals that
have wondered into town or residential areas.

Probationary Officer
EARNINGS
$30,000 to $35,000 a year
REQUIREMENTS
• College degree or previous law enforcement experience • Must pass written, medical, psychological, and physical exams
RESPONSIBILITIES
Enforcing vehicle laws, criminal laws, and natural resource laws.



LEVEL 2
Conservation Officer
EARNINGS
$40,000 to $60,000 a year (salaries can vary from the state to national levels, as well as by location)
REQUIREMENTS
• Completion of probationary period
RESPONSIBILITIES
Enforcing vehicle laws, criminal laws, and natural resource laws; more investigative work and maybe some undercover work.



LEVEL 3
Sergeant or Captain
EARNINGS
$50,000 to $80,000 a year
REQUIREMENTS
• More training in investigation • Several years of field experience • Seniority
RESPONSIBILITIES
Mostly administrative work and supervision of all the other officers; some investigative work.



LEVEL 4
Chief Conservation Officer
EARNINGS
$80,000 to $85,000 a year
REQUIREMENTS
• Many years of field experience • Administrative skills

Supervising the district; responsible for district enforcement program;
